Autism Parent Meditation and Mindfulness

As an autism parent, finding moments of peace and calm amidst the demands of everyday life can feel challenging….to say the least!

Meditation offers us a powerful, always-accessible tool to cultivate mindfulness, reduce stress, and enhance our overall well-being.

In this article, we'll explore seven practical tips to help you incorporate meditation into your life, even with a busy schedule. So let's dive in and discover how you can begin a meditation practice, find time for it, and experience the numerous benefits it brings.

The Benefits Of Meditation

Meditation offers a range of benefits for autism parents. Plus, the more you do it, the better it seems to work…remember, it’s a meditation practice… which means you have to practice doing it!

These are just some of the benefits that can happen when you regularly meditate or practice mindfulness…

  • Reduce stress
  • Promote relaxation
  • Allows you to approach challenges with greater clarity and calmness
  • Enhances self-awareness and emotional regulation
  • Empowers you to respond to your child's needs effectively (and without reacting reactively)
  • Improves focus and attention
  • Fosters resilience and a sense of overall well-being
  • Promotes better mental and emotional health

How To Begin A Meditation Practice

Starting a meditation practice may seem daunting, but it's easier than you think! You can do it any place, in any position…many people like to lie or sit down. You could just as easily do it lying down on a bed or sitting up at the kitchen table!

If you can, find a quiet place…it’ll make it easier on you while you get started. If you don’t have a quiet place (hello, life parenting an autistic child!), you can still do the technique, even if it isn’t quite as quiet.

Set a timer for a few minutes to start and gradually increase the duration. Focus on your breath or choose a simple mantra to repeat silently. Remember, it's normal for thoughts to arise; gently bring your attention back to your breath or mantra.

How Long Should I Meditate?

It’s 100% up to you!

The duration of your meditation practice is flexible and depends on your schedule, preferences, and everything else you have going on in your life! Even short meditation sessions, like 5-10 minutes, can have a significant impact on your well-being.

When it comes to meditation and mindfulness, some is definitely better than none.

How To Meditate When You Don’t Have Time

Even with a busy schedule, it's possible to incorporate meditation into your day.

Find pockets of time, such as during your child's nap or before they wake up in the morning. You can also try mini-meditations throughout the day, taking a few mindful breaths during transitions or waiting periods. Some people enjoy doing a quick meditation before they get out of bed in the morning or as a part of their wind-down bedtime routine.

A great time to practice meditation is while you’re waiting for your kiddo. Times like when they’re finishing therapy, school pick-up time, and waiting for them to finish up in the bathroom can all be times where you can tap into a little mindful zone out…just make sure you’re doing it safely and that your child is properly supervised if they need to be.

3 Easy Ways to Practice Meditation

If traditional sitting meditation doesn't resonate with you, explore alternative forms of meditation. Find something that works for you, and helps your brain learn how to be at peace with itself…

  • Walking meditation involves focusing on each step and being mindful of your surroundings.
  • Guided meditations, available through apps or online platforms, provide step-by-step instructions to help you relax and focus.
  • Body scan meditations involve systematically bringing awareness to different parts of your body, promoting relaxation and release of tension.
